ENGLAND manager Roy Hodgson was full of praise for Harry Kane after the Tottenham striker made a dream debut at Wembley.

The Spurs goal-machine scored within 80 seconds of coming on for his senior debut as a second-half substitute for Wayne Rooney.

Kane sent the 80,000-plus home crowd into delirium with a header that squirmed past Lithuanian goalkeeper Giedrius Arlauskis on 73 minutes.

After the match, Lithuania coach Igoris Pankratjevas called Kane "a sniper" for scoring so quickly after coming on.

England coach Roy Hodgson laughed at the comment, but was equally full of praise for the 21-year-old striker.

"It's fantastic for Harry. We’re all so delighted for him," he said. "It is a bit of a fairy tale, but it’s nice when fairy tales come true, and it’s come true for Harry.

"He’s crowned his debut with a well-taken goal. I hope that it's the start of a long career with England."

Hodgson also backed Kane to cope with all the media and fan attention. "I don't think he will buckle under pressure. He's in good hands at Spurs with Mauricio Pochettino."

England made the perfect start after only six minutes when Rooney headed home after Arlauskis had kept out a Danny Welbeck piledriver.

Welbeck doubled England's lead on the stroke of half-time with a glancing header from a Jordan Henderson cross which trickled past the keeper with the aid of a deflection.

Raheem Sterling got in on the act to grab his first England goal, steering home Rooney's cross in the 59th minute.

With the Three Lions coasting, a roar went up on 64 minutes when Kane was summoned from the bench. The young Spur was itching to come on, but had to wait six minutes before there was a break in play. Seventy-nine seconds later, Kane did what he has been doing all season, and scored – making him one of England's quickest goalscoring debutants of all time.

On 76 minutes, Arsenal's Theo Walcott came on for team-mate Welbeck, who turned in an impressive performance to earn himself the man-of-the-match accolade.
