Just think how money could be raised…

• CABINET member Adam Harrison’s proposal (Climate bonds a new way of funding, January 13) is a brilliant, original, idea.

It provides a source of funding which could not be scrutinised by the usual whingers.

It could be used for paying for expert advice from consultants. One has already received some £9.1million between 2011 and the present on the Community Investment Programme and helping to shape development issues.

There are surely others who could provide the council with similar excellent advice on climate matters. But why stop with bonds on climate issues?

Why not have bonds for building on the Bacton and other sites in Gospel Oak which have been derelict for nearly 10 years?

Another use could be to pay for increases in cabinet members’ allowances. These were increased by £10k each per year three years ago and are surely due for a further hike.

How about a bond to pay for uncollected debts such as the Talacre lost £3.8million developer’s payment?

Or, nearer home to Cllr Harrison, a bond to help clear the piles of litter and fly-dumping in on our streets? This is a frequent subject of letters in this newspaper and such a bond would be very popular.

Buying such bonds, of course, would be voluntary, unlike the present high council tax and service charges.

And presumably, at some point, the bond-buyers would get back their money, providing the council does not go bust in the meantime.

Let us have more such brilliant ideas; a borough lottery, regular raffles with such prizes as a day with the mayor; a free meal in the town hall canteen; a day with the dust carts…
