JUNIOR Highgate Harriers enjoyed their chance to shine on Saturday when they took part in the South of England Cross-Country Championship at Parliament Hill Fields.

Showing off their club tattoos, the boys Under-15s side were all smiles as they bagged a bronze after finishing third out of 23 teams in their event with 170 points.

Terry Fawden was the first Highgate junior over the finishing line in 20th place, closely followed by Ben Hatch in 31st spot. James Millett and Alex Machin-Paley also gained precious points as they finished 49th and 71st respectively.

In the Under-15s girls’ race Georgia Fear finished 10th out of 187 runners. And in the Under-13s boys’ race Dempster Fawden was 28th out of 204 runners, while in the Under-13s girls’ race Anna Willis was 35th out of 204 finishers.

In truth the day again belonged to the men’s senior team, who haven’t been outside the top two club places since the cross-country season began in October.

So it was a fitting and deserved tribute to their team efforts on Saturday when they took silver place overall after successfully tackling a muddy Hampstead Heath course.

Highgate’s six scorers were all inside the top 48 out of the field of 541. Ben Noad led the charge in 11th place, while Danny Russell was 20th, Richard Scott was 23rd, Ben Pochee was 26th, Ryan McKinlay was 28th and Henry Dodwell was 48th.
