Join the march against racism

Thursday, 15th November 2018

• WE are witnessing the rapid growth of the far right internationally, and Britain has not been immune.

Across Europe parties with fascist roots and promoting overtly racist, Islamophobic, and anti-Semitic views have gained their highest levels of support since the 1930s with extreme anti-migrant parties now sitting in governments in at least seven EU states.

In Britain far right forces mobilising in support of English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson have put thousands of often violent supporters on the streets of London and other cities on a scale not seen for decades.

Across the Atlantic Donald Trump’s election as US president has emboldened far right organisations and individuals, culminating in pipe bombs being posted to his political opponents, the cold-blooded racist murder of two African-Americans and an anti-Semitic atrocity at a Pittsburgh synagogue that killed 11.

Locally self-styled Trump supporters staged an attack on the socialist bookshop Bookmarks in early August. Meanwhile attacks in print on Muslim women by the likes of ex-foreign secretary Boris Johnson have reinforced Islamophobia.

Overall police in England and Wales in 2017-18 recorded some 94,000 hate crimes, a 17 per cent increase on the previous year and more than double the number five years ago. More than three-quarters of these had a racial motive.

In response to the upsurge in far right mobilisations and racist violence generally, Stand Up To Racism, which has the support of numerous unions, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and shadow home secretary Diane Abbott, has called a demonstration on Saturday November 17.

The Trades Union Congress unanimously agreed in September to support this effort to unite the left, and broader labour, trade union and anti-racist movements.

We urge all those who live, work or study in Camden to support the demo on the November 17, which is assembling from noon outside the BBC’s Broadcasting House, Portland Place W1A 1AA.
