One puzzle remains…

• MANY thanks to Martin Plaut for sharing his biographical sketch of the South African anti-apartheid fighter Neville Alexander, (Neville Alexander’s story is extraordinary, February 2).
Alexander’s ideas – along with those of Edward Said and Antonio Gramsci – will be discussed at the annual lecture of the Centre for Palestine Studies in the Brunei Gallery at SOAS on March 3.
The speaker will be the well-known anti-apartheid activist Salim Vally, director of the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation, and professor at the University of Johannesburg.
Your readers who would like to attend his talk – Fighting Apartheid in South Africa and Israel: The responsibility of intellectuals – are more than welcome.
Another event which, given his call to support those demonstrating against the present Israeli government, we may assume Mr Plaut will welcome, is the establishment of a new group in the United Kingdom, namely Liberal Jews for Justice in Israel / Palestine. LJJIP will stand alongside Jews for Justice for Palestinians (JfJfP) and Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL) in fighting for justice for Palestinians.
One puzzle remains however. Could Mr Plaut explain to readers the grounds upon which the Labour Party, under its present leadership, has recently warned / suspended / expelled around 60 or so of its Jewish members?
