The beauty of Japanese sakura

THE 2006 gentrification of Swiss Cottage had many faults: the perennially empty Visage block of private homes; the loss of the hugely popular seven-a-side football pitch; the questionable water feature…

But while the regeneration left a bad taste in the mouths of many, there is one thing the council should be praised for.

The rows of Japanese sakura pink-flowering blossoms that appear in mid-March are an annual delight and surely one of the most picturesque scenes in Camden.

The early spring marvel sees the autumnalis rosea’s rosy pink flowers open from dark pink buds and fade to softer tones as they age.
