Heron 1

My photo of a lone grey heron

THE north woods, between the Spaniards Inn and Golders Hill Park, are the perfect place to escape the wittering weekend throngs on Hampstead Heath and Kenwood.

I spotted a lone grey heron on Sunday afternoon that seemed to be enjoying the solace of a small pond in a secluded tree-lined grove.

Grey herons, which prey on fish and frogs, have a wingspan of more than six feet and are among the largest birds you will find on the Heath.
