Farewell to one of the family

Charlotte Chambers

THE July 7 bombings will be remembered well by the ever-young Charlotte Chambers, who along with me had just been recruited as fledgling reporters on the CNJ by our late former editor, Eric Gordon.

I remember us both walking around the old King’s Cross without any sense of understanding of what had happened or what we should be doing journalistically. Mobile phone systems were down and there was no internet for anyone to communicate with each other.

We got elbowed out of the way by a national news reporter when speaking to a shocked passenger who had been on the Tube and had been wrapped in a tinfoil sheet by the emergency services. Nineteen years later, Charlotte is leaving the paper after her second stint at 40 Camden Road, most recently having helped run our sister paper the Islington Tribune for three years.

We’re all going to miss her in the office but she will always remain a huge part of the New Journal family. And as she has proved already: they all come back, they always come back.
