The stench pipe in Priory Terrace
READERS have dutifully answered my call last week to locate the great stink pipes of Camden, including this beauty in Belsize Road.
It towers what must be 50 feet above the streets and houses on the junction with Priory Terrace, in West Hampstead.
Stink, or stench pipes have for more than 150 years spewed out gas from the sewer network.
They lend a lordly glow to residential streets with another eagle-eyed reader spotting one tucked away in Agamemnon Road, also in NW6. And I’m told this week they are still fully operational.
A Thames Water spokeswoman said: “I expect there may be the odd one that isn’t if it’s connected to a section of sewer that’s no longer in use, but the majority will be doing the exact thing they were designed to do all those years ago.”
