Swingers weekend: Jitterbug championships held in King's Cross
Tuesday, 9th June 2015

IT WAS a swingers weekend in King’s Cross as hundreds of dancers came to town for the National Jitterbug Championships.
The Camden Centre was filled with more than 180 competitors from all over Europe, who came to strut their stuff as part of the London Swing Festival. Lindy Hop took centre stage as dancers battled it out on the floor, hoping to take home the trophy.
King’s Cross dance teacher Rupert Sanford-Scutt, part of the Skyliners dance troupe, took second place in the team competition.
Strictly Come Dancing assistant choreographer Scott Cupit, who lives in Mornington Crescent, was master of ceremonies.
He founded dance company Swing Patrol 15 years ago, after leaving a career in banking behind, and has since appeared on Dragons’ Den to gain funding for the dance school.
Mr Cupit said: “People all over the world are getting involved in Lindy Hop again. It has experienced this great resurgence, it is even bigger now than back in the day.”
He added: “We chose the Camden Centre because it is just such a beautiful venue, it’s got a great dance floor that fits a lot of people for swing dancing.”
