JEREMY Hunt has met Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe’s four year old daughter in Iran.
The foreign secretary exchanged gifts with Gabriella that included dolls made by Nazanin for his own daughter.
Nazanin has been in prison since 2016 and is facing a five year sentence after being charged with plotting to overthrow the regime.
A campaign to get her released has so far been unsuccessful but, in a statement on Twitter, Mr Hunt said: “No child should have to go this long without their mother. Free Nazanin.”
Yesterday Mr Hunt called for the “immediate release” of all “detained British-Iranian dual nationals where there are humanitarian grounds”.
The Free Nazanin campaign said it was “very touched” that Mr Hunt had found the time to meet Nazanin’s family and for bringing gifts.
It said Mr Hunt had met Nazanin’s parents, brother and Gabriella who is a British citizen and used to live with her parents in West Hampstead.
Husband Richard Ratcliffe is unable to visit his wife and daughter in Iran for fear of of imprisonment. He has not seen either, other than on Skype, since Nazanin was arrested in Tehran airport in April 2016.
Hampstead and Kilburn MP Tulip Siddiq said: “Nazanin will soon spend her third Xmas arbitrarily imprisoned. With her 40th birthday approaching, she remains separated from her life in West Hampstead.” She said she hoped Mr Hunt’s visit to Tehran must not be another “false dawn” adding that Iran has “used her as diplomatic leverage and it is totally unacceptable”.
