‘Approximately 8 per cent of my gross yearly salary will go into the council’s coffers’

• I HAVE just received my council tax bill and see that I will be handing over approximately 8 per cent of my gross yearly salary into the council’s coffers, even after the single-person discount.

In the accompanying letter Cllr Georgia Gould dares to mention the cost of living crisis and other hardships residents suffer; yet this council tax bill amounts to more money than my gas, electricity, water, and telecoms bills combined, and furthermore it is higher than what I pay in income tax.

Tellingly there is no revealing pie-chart of council spending with this new letter. Instead, Cllr Gould gives a somewhat scant list of services “our community relies on”, and top of the list is street cleaning; quote “including a new jet washer and night-time cleaning in our busiest areas so residents wake up to cleaner streets”.

Living on York Way I would like to inform readers that I have already experienced this dubious “service” and think that the text should read: “including a new jet washer and night-time cleaning so residents wake up in the early hours from all the racket it makes”.
