Waitrose in Camden High Street is to become an Aldi
• THE change from Waitrose to Aldi concerns even more than the valued social space used by customers (‘There’s nowhere else like it’: Shoppers to hold farewell celebration for Waitrose, August 30). It is the staff we need to worry about most.
When the Co-op moved out of its space on Camden High Street and Waitrose moved in, the Co-op stayed true to its ethical principles and ensured that its long-standing staff got jobs in the new Waitrose. Many of these workers are still there, but now there have been no guarantees at all of future employment in Aldi.
A recent New Journal editorial pointed out that we can’t just leave it to trade unions to fight changes such as the looming closure of our main post office; and now the loss of all these jobs at Waitrose. In Camden we need to show that we notice, care, and will resist.
