It’s not just the buses, we need an overall transport plan

Thursday, 2nd February 2023

• IT is not just problems with buses (Marooned because we have no buses, January 26), but the failure of the council and co-conspirators to produce a logical overall transport plan.

This must include the needs of people with disabilities. Currently in our area the uncoordinated road closures makes life even harder for people with mobility difficulties and their carers.

The council not only ignores local advice but even rejects simple no-cost suggestions. With the technology of ANPR it would be possible for people with blue badges and their carers to be allowed to go into closure areas without being fined. Hackney Council allows this.

One resident who is a carer for her mother has to drive well over a mile to her home which is probably only 200 yards away. Some taxis and delivery services will not enter the area because of the complexity of the road closure system.

A group of us met council officers to voice our concern and asked for a trip around the area with a senior councillor to list and locate our concerns. Our request was again ignored.

Road closure schemes were introduced in Gospel Oak with little consultation with those of us with mobility issues actually living there. There needs to be a radical overhaul of the practices of the council in relation to people with disabilities, not just mobility.

The council seems unaware of its legal duty to make “reasonable adjustments” for people with disabilities. Day to day living is a struggle for many of us, never mind the extra barriers put in our way by Camden Council.
