Camden’s councillors putting in the hours… 

• WITH reference to the letter from David Williams (What about councillors’ hours worked? May 5), I would like to make two points.

First, it’s important that elected councillors in Camden should be paid. Otherwise we exclude from office any person without the privilege of family wealth, a trust fund, or the odd property investment.

Such a system clearly works for Boris Johnson and his band of old Etonian cronies but is surely not a proper way to organise a modern democracy.

Second, for reassurance, I live with one of Camden’s councillors and am happy to report that she spends at least 30 hours per week working at her ward councillor duties.
