THERE were cheers aplenty on Thursday as scores of young footballers flocked to Market Road in Islington to take part in a new girls’ league.

The District London League will give Year 5 and 6 pupils a new platform to show off their silky skills, precise passing and tremendous team play in a series of group games, before taking part in a special finals day at West Ham United’s Beckton training ground.

Organised by coaches from Barking and Dagenham, the showpiece couldn’t have asked for a more mouth-watering opening fixture as Camden were drawn against rivals Islington.

Camden put in a masterclass of finishing to secure a 23-0 victory but their manager Kirsty Stewart, who runs the team on behalf of the Camden Sport and Physical Activity Service, was quick to praise both sides after the game.

“Islington deserve a lot of credit because their players kept on going and didn’t complain once,” she said. “It’s a great start for Camden; the girls played some lovely passing football and scored some great goals.

“But I don’t want the result to go to their heads,” she added, “results like this don’t come along very often so it’s important they keep working hard and put in the training.”

Kadie Gallagher and Sasha Lewin led Camden’s charge as they netted five goals each, while Tierney Gallagher and Poppy Murphy both hit four.

Olivia Morgan-Joy and Anadleen Singh-Logia both bagged a brace, while Emna Braham also got in on the action with a well-taken goal.
