A cycle racks posing as a crash barrier in Mornington Crescent

• WHEN Camden Council introduced a traffic-calming scheme for the junction of Arlington Road and Mornington Crescent, it featured a raised table and extended pavements on both sides of the roadway.

When this work was completed there were six bollards, but now there are only five. It so happened that one bollard in particular was being knocked over so often by careless motorists that the council lost interest in repairing it.

Instead they decided to put a cycle rack in its place in 2015. However, the cycle rack has had to be replaced twice as a result of accidents.

Cyclists are now reluctant to use this cycle rack as it has hazard reflectors – and they remember what a badly buckled cycle rack looks like after it was ploughed into by a motorist recently.

Is it a good idea for Camden to be using cycle racks as crash barriers?  It’s less costly to reposition a bollard as it is indestructible.
