‘Irreplaceable' chair goes missing from West Hampstead church
St Cuthbert’s Church makes appeal

A CHURCH is appealing for the return of specially-made chair after it mysteriously vanished.
St Cuthbert’s Church in Fordwych Road, West Hampstead, has put up missing posters for the “irreplaceable” wooden seat. One of a unique pair, it has been in the building since the 1980s.
“It’s very mysterious that we’ve lost this chair,” said Clare Sunderland, a member of the church council. “We don’t have much furniture, and we just want it back.
“We can’t be sure enough to be making an accusation, but it clearly has been stolen. It would mean a great deal to have it back, it’s very sad that it’s disappeared.”
She added: “We hope that possibly, though it’s a long shot, if someone has seen it, maybe there is more chance it might get back to us.”
Ms Sunderland described the item as “irreplaceable”, as it was custom designed by a Swedish architect and one of a pair that have been in the church since the early 1980s.
It is not clear when the chair went missing, as St Cuthbert’s hasn’t been holding regular services since June.
Services have been suspended due to low attendance and its priest moved on at the start of the year.
“We are taking this time to discern prayerfully what kind of church and community the Lord is calling St Cuthbert’s to become,” a post on the church’s website said.
Ms Sunderland said she was hopeful that a new priest would be appointed, and that the missing chair returned for when services resume.
There are many events ongoing at the church building including weekly community lunches, a nursery and concerts continuing at the church building.
“It’s quite a thriving parish”, said Ms Sunderland.
