Invention of controversy

Thursday, 28th March 2019

• I REFER to Rebecca Shirazi’s letter (Labour now has rules on gender balance, OK, March 21) – her ability to invent controversy out of my very short, factual, letter of March 14 (There’s a history of women here… ) is astonishing.

All it did was to record the names of four women who had chaired the Labour Party in the Hampstead Constituency Labour Party before it was joined by three wards in Brent and became Hampstead and Kilburn in 2010, not 2006.

In it I “argued” nothing, whether “bizarrely” or not. I did not criticise the Labour Party rules on gender balance, nor am I “outraged” by them.

I was at the annual general meeting but nothing occurred there which could allow her to identify the “tiny minority of members” she claims “are outraged” by them, or that there was “even more” outrage “that a woman was elected as chair”.
