Injuries add to Arsenal gloom ahead of derby clash

Gunners will never win the league again

IT was a night as miserable as the weather for north London’s finest last night (Wednesday) as Arsenal suffered a shock defeat against Swansea, while Tottenham fluffed the chance to take over at the top of the Premier League table. It’s perhaps the Gunners fans who will be feeling worse, however, after Arsene Wenger revealed following their defeat that both Petr Cech and Laurent Koscielny will miss Saturday’s must-win derby at White Hart Lane through injury. “Cech was struggling before the game with a groin problem. He will not play on Saturday,” said the Arsenal boss. “I have complete confidence in David Ospina. “Koscielny has a calf problem, he will also not play on Saturday.” Reflecting on the Swansea defeat, Wenger added: “We’re lacking confidence at the moment. We were also unlucky tonight because we hit the post and the crossbar. “We must go back to basics. And we must find a positive result before we talk about the title. I am not in the mood to talk about the title.” The boos rang out on the sound of the final whistle after the Gunners snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in a disappointing night at the Emirates. The evening started brightly enough with Joel Campbell hooking the home side in front in the 15th minute after racing on to Alexis Sanchez’s dinked pass. But the cheers soon turned into jeers as goals from Wayne Routledge and Ashley Williams saw Swansea come from behind to snatch an unlikely win. The result was compounded by the news that Tottenham – who Arsenal are so desperately trying to overtake in the table and the title race – had suffered defeat away at West Ham. Michail Antonio’s powerful seventh-minute header proved the difference between the two sides as Spurs squandered the chance to leap-frog leaders Leicester. Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino said his players were disappointed with their performance in what was such a big game. “It was unusual to play this way, without rhythm,” he said. “We made mistakes. It was difficult in the first 20 minutes. “We started not so good and conceded the early goal. The players are very disappointed how we conceded that goal. “But we fought well in the second half. We can be positive in the dressing room, and be confident ahead of Saturday’s game.”
