Inaction on an out-of-service lift doesn’t help fight the virus

Councillor Georgia Gould, Leader of Camden Council

• CAMDEN Council leader Georgia Gould speaks about maintenance of “social distancing” to slow the spread of “this terrible virus”, (Weekly update, CNJ, October 22).

There are two lifts in 19-floor Mary Green tower block (102 flats) but lift no 2 has been out of service since October 6.

Despite taking up the issue with Camden’s maintenance department and Cllr Gould, nothing has been done even after nearly three weeks. Owing to only one lift in operation many tenants are deliberately violating the “social distancing”.

Cllr Gould has been told personally about reckless conduct of recalcitrant tenants but she seems to have turned a blind eye as there is no urgency either to repair the lift or to stop tenants violating the “social distancing”.

There is CCTV. Therefore those who are deliberately violating the “social distancing rules” can be identified and necessary action can be taken to stop spreading the virus.

Yet the council has done nothing. Camden may be lucky so far but luck may run out if violation of Covid-19 rules is allowed in this way.
