I’m sad to see these squatters evicted

Housing activists who ‘reclaimed’ a former carpet shop in Kentish Town, but are now being evicted
• I NOTICED walking by the social space on Kentish Town Road that they look like they are being evicted from the former carpet shop (Rough sleepers given a home after squatters ‘reclaim’ vacant carpet shop, June 8).
I popped into the shop a few times and found the people running it to be a good bunch. For weeks they served the community with free clothes, books, DVDs and tea and coffee while also offering workshops and advice for the homeless and refugees and it provided a general meeting place for the community.
So I am a little sad to see them being evicted. It is not as if the people running these projects are trying to overthrow the system.
I think it a sad indictment of society that these kids can’t be given some space for a few months to explore new ways of doing things and in general expressing themselves. The establishment should not be so harsh on them.
