The new fad for streateries is not a cure-all

• THE new fad for streateries is not a cure-all for lockdown blues.

Camden’s latest proposal, to turn Winchester Road into one, makes no practical sense.

It is not the most pleasant atmosphere: it’s narrow and a busy rat-run for the schools around the corner. It is mainly residential with just two small restaurants, one of which hasn’t been open in a year.

The large square in front of the Hampstead Theatre and Central School is a more appropriate location. The theatre has a café and there is plenty of room for tables and benches to be spread out under the trees. The local youth can gather there and not bother residents.

There would be no loss of 14 parking spaces which the area can ill-afford. And it would be cheaper for taxpayers than partitioning off the street.

We urge Camden councillors to rethink this proposal and turn it into something enjoyable for everyone.
