I look forward to a wider trans debate within Labour

Thursday, 18th August 2022

• I’M grateful that Angela Mason has broken the “No debate” Labour Party line (We need a wider debate on transgender services, August 11), especially as Labour has done everything possible to stop all discussion and stayed quiet as party members, including the MP Rosie Duffield, are slurred as transphobic bigots for raising concerns.

Maybe if some debate and discussion had occurred she might understand that puberty blockers are a “play button, not a pause button” as detransitioner Keira Bell describes.

She might also have read Abigail Shrier’s carefully researched and heartbreaking book Irreversible Damage which describes many of the pressures that lead children and young people (especially girls) to feel that chest binders, name changes, puberty blockers and surgery will improve their lives.

I look forward to more discussion on this issue in the Labour Party, especially given its responsibility for Camden schools and health services.
