No to Camden Wheel_john Sadler

• WHEN Camden Lock market began from virtually nothing back in the 1960s, it was sited on derelict wasteland left over from the decline of canals from their glory days as a main system of cargo transportation from Victorian times and before.

We are now witnessing the decline of town centre shopping centres including their street markets which Labtech – owners of Camden Market – are seeking to slow down and even halt by building big wheels and other non retail fairground-type attractions, (Busy? We need more visitors to Camden Market, say owners, June 1).

That’s entirely understandable. But what they must bear in mind is they don’t own the community in which their market operates. They must have the final say in where their area is heading. And my guess is that they don’t want to be living slap-bang in the middle of a fairground – however edgy or high tech!
