I appeal to Labour Party members to stay and resist the drive to the right
Friday, 14th August 2020
• ALTHOUGH I am chair of Hampstead and Kilburn Constituency Labour Party, I am writing this in a personal capacity in response to the letter by Cristel Amiss and Sara Callaway, in which they announced that they are leaving the party, (People of colour are suffering 24/7, August 6).
I regard Cristel and Sara as friends, as well as having respect for them in the work they have put in our (Kilburn) branch and the constituency party.
I know that they will continue to campaign around issues dear to them, and hope that those of us who remain in the party will work with them. However, I strongly disagree with their decision to resign.
I and many other Labour Party members share their anger and frustration at the direction Sir Keir Starmer appears to want to take the party, contrary to his promises during the leadership election campaign to keep the policies developed under Jeremy Corbyn and to unite the party.
Many other examples could be provided in addition to those cited by Sara and Cristel. But, for those of us committed to socialism and a radical Labour government we won’t achieve these by leaving the field to those who agree with Sir Keir.
That only makes it easier for them. I would appeal to any Labour Party members thinking of following Sara and Cristel to reconsider and instead work with those of us who are working to resist Sir Keir’s drive to the right.
