HS2 must rethink the idea of a large scale taxi rank at Eversholt Street
Thursday, 26th July 2018
• HS2 are proposing a taxi rank of 39 spaces in Eversholt Street next to Euston station between 2022 and 2026.
Eversholt Street, being a narrow road and a bus route, already experiences traffic congestion with associated high pollution adding to the already well-known high pollution from Euston Road. There will be increased traffic due to HS2 construction lorries and displaced traffic from closed streets.
Although the proposal would avoid a taxi rank in Drummond Crescent near the new Maria Fidelis School, the idea of a very long rank in Eversholt Street is not a good idea.
It would badly hit businesses and pedestrians and children going to school. It could result in the loss of the bus lane and mean destroying some of the mature trees next to the station. The rank will operate until the early hours of the morning and will disturb residents.
The dreadful experience of the very long taxi rank in Midland Road next to St Pancras International station that often extends round the corner into Goods Way shows just how polluting a taxi rank can be. We are apparently not able to control taxis idling incessantly at these ranks.
HS2 need to rethink this proposal. It is a thoroughly bad idea and another temporary place for the taxi rank needs to be found. Write to HS2 at 112 Hampstead Road, NW1 2PS or email HS2 at Camden@hs2.org.uk.
