How can Israel claim to be the only democracy in the Middle East?

Thursday, 19th July 2018

• WITH reference to Martin Plaut’s letter concerning the definition of anti-Semitism, (Labour should act ‘sharpish’ and adopt the full IHRA definition of anti-Semitism, July 12).

What is his opinion about the new basic law to be voted in the Knesset which states: Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people? What about the two million who were living in Palestine prior to the establishment of the state of Israel?

Hebrew is the state language. What about those who do not speak Hebrew? Why is there no second language? What will happen to the Palestinians living in Israel? What about the occupied territories?

And the illegal settlements? Will they be considered part of Israel proper? Will such a law apply to them? How can Israel claim that it is the only democracy in the Middle East by pursuing an apartheid policy?
