FAVOURITES tumbled at the tables on Monday as players from the Chalk Farm Pool League witnessed a shocking night of cup upsets at venues across Camden and Islington.

There was no end to the drama as potters took a break from their usual club competitions to focus on the singles, doubles and seniors championships.

Having won the doubles title five times in the last six years, Sir Robert Peel pairing Danny James and Sonny Saunders were much-fancied to retain their crown.

Round one opponents Michael Slattery and Les Mason from Slattery’s weren’t phased by their rivals potting pedigree, however, as they powered to a memorable 2-0 victory.

The cup upsets didn’t stop there as Chris Heim, the runner-up in the singles championship last season and heavily tipped to go one further this time, was knocked out by Sir Robert Peel team-mate Neil Faux.

On a night of closely-contested matches there was at least one cup favourite who delivered. Singles champion Pat McGahy, who plays for Boston Arms, saw off the challenge of Michael Ames from Boston Rimmers to edge a step closer to successfully defending his title.

• THERE’S still time for premier potters to sign up for the Central London Blackball King’s Cross Open Tournament, which takes place this Sunday, November 29. The competition is being held at the King’s Cross Hurricane Rooms, and registration starts at 10am. Entry costs £15, with prize money up for grabs.
