PHOENIX finished their season on a high at the weekend when they signed off in the Hackney and Leyton Sunday League Premier Division with a trophy, a 5-0 win over Clapton Rangers and a 32nd league goal for Niko Muir.

Michael Patrick, Gio Falzone and Valen McKay (2) lit up the final game of the season with their goals, but it was leading scorer Muir’s second-half effort that really caught the eye as he turned on a sixpence to volley beyond three Clapton defenders on the edge of the box.

Phoenix manager Anthony Clark praised the entire team but added that Muir’s contribution of 43 goals in all competitions had been crucial in a season that saw the former Camden Sunday League team lift their 12th career trophy.

“Without Niko the league would have been closer,” Clark said. “He’s been instrumental for us and some of his goals have been deciders.

“And to win 5-0 against a team like Clapton Rangers shows how far we have kicked on.

“I would really like to thank Dave Harber for all his hard work, as well as Paul Dunne and Paul Badman for their support.”
