THE slam-dunking success was shared around the court when three secondary schools netted glory in a prestigious basketball tournament.
Hoop-happy youngsters from Haverstock School in Chalk Farm, Regent High in Somers Town and William Ellis in Highgate all proudly showed off their winners’ medals after shooting their way to silverware in the annual Camden School Sports Federation Basketball Championships.
Led by star player Ian Tagalan, Haverstock started the celebrations when they beat UCL Academy, which opened in Swiss Cottage last year, 10-5 to win the Year 7 Camden Shield.
The closest play-off of the day at William Ellis School last Wednesday saw Regent High, formerly known as South Camden Community School, narrowly beat Haverstock 17-14 to proudly lift the Years 8 and 9 title.
Delighted coach Robin Fox, who earmarked Anis Assoweh as Regent High’s star player, said: “The team was consistent, distributed the ball well, and played with great intensity.”
Hosts William Ellis had the final say as, with the help of player-of-the-match AlexSappa, they beat Haverstock 37-30 to get their hands on the Years 10 and 11 trophy.
Winning coach Juan Escobar said: “The team played with great enthusiasm right from the first training session and have grown in skill throughout the tournament.”
