High Line hang-up

Thursday, 17th September 2020

• A HIGH level walkway through Camden sounds like a brilliant idea and the High Line in New York is certainly spectacular.

But there is a crucial difference. The New York High Line is on an abandoned rail line. Walkers have it entirely to themselves.

In Camden the route is used to capacity by both passenger and freight trains and the narrow path which the High Line would use is likely, in the not too distant future, to be needed to increase the rail capacity, particularly for freight trains as environmental concerns transfer more goods from road to rail.

If I was Network Rail I would be very concerned if railway land which might very well be needed for rail use was surrendered to other uses.
