Here’s a simple fix for the electoral system

Electoral reform now!

• THE fact that the recent Scottish and UK referendum questions came in around 50:50 with the punters but 80:20 in the elected parliaments highlights the severe lack of representative democracy in both electoral systems and makes the calls for electoral reform from many of your correspondents impossible to ignore.

Shortly after the Brexit referendum caused apoplexy, from which some have never recovered (see Alastair Campbell on Newsnight), I proposed that the simplest fix for the voting system would be to switch from first-past-the-post to first-and-second-past-the-post; first into the first chamber second into the second chamber.

This would instantly double representation without even altering the voting mechanism and have the added benefit of clearing out once and for all the unelected washouts and deadbeats in the present House of Lords.
