• THE City of London Corporation – surely not short of a bob or two – choose the midst of the worst pandemic in centuries to announce that they want to cut the maintenance budget for Hampstead Heath.
The richest financial centre in the world, it seems, has nothing put by for a rainy day.
After the scrapping of the Greater London Council, this hub of wealth was entrusted with the task of looking after some of the capital’s most cherished common land which offers relief to the hundreds of thousands of people who have no gardens or greenery of their own. And here it is pleading poverty.
Well we really must respond to their call. How about collection boxes being strategically placed around the Heath?
Emblazone them with the plea: “Give generously to our impoverished bankers so they can give just a little bit back to the community that made their wealth.”
