Tenants’ and residents’ associations, community groups, tenants, and any individuals with opinions on housing are encouraged to submit their views to the inquiry

• THERE is a drastic lack of affordable housing in Camden and across the country.

One reason for this is the massive sell-off of council houses over recent decades.

According to one estimate the number of council homes in the United Kingdom fell from 6.5 million to 2 million between 1979 and 2017.

This has forced millions of people into the expensive and insecure private rented sector.

Hundreds of thousands of others are homeless or in temporary accommodation; rough sleeping has increased 169 per cent since 2010, according to government figures.

There is an all party parliamentary group on council housing which brings together MPs from different parties who are campaigning for more council housing to be built.

They have launched an inquiry and want people to submit evidence about the need for housing in their local area.

They will use this evidence to encourage the current government (and a future Labour government) to build more council housing. The more evidence they receive the better.

So tenants’ and residents’ associations, community groups, tenants, and any individuals with opinions on housing are encouraged to submit their views to the inquiry.

The deadline is the March 15 and submissions should be sent to: jamie.sweeney@parliament.uk

More info can be found at: https://www.parallelparliament.co.uk/APPG/council-housing.

This is one small thing people in Camden can do to encourage the building of more affordable housing in the future.
