WE don’t know whether to be flattered or scared, but councillors have been devoting their evenings to extra training sessions ahead of a football match against our team of journalists.

The ruling Labour group has been spending every spare second preparing for the fund-raising game which is due to kick off tomorrow night (Friday). It’s all in aid of a very good cause, however – as the football challenge at Coram’s Fields has been set up to raise money for our Christmas Hamper Appeal.

Win, lose or draw – everybody taking to the pitch has the aim of raising as much money as possible to help those facing hardship this year. You can help sponsor the match by clicking on the donate button found below:

The last time Camden Labour took on the CNJ, they lost 10-0 at the Talacre Sports Pitch – and have said they are determined to reverse that scoreline this time around. So while our reporters have been chasing stories and meeting deadlines this week, the politicians have been taking part in endless training drills.

Readers are probably well aware of our long-running hamper appeal and our annual attempt to make sure nobody in Camden feels forgotten at what should be a special time of year. In simple terms, we raise as much as money as we can in November and December – with the generous help of residents, businesses and other organisations – and then use the money to send out the boxes of treats.

They go to isolated pensioners and to those who have experienced hardship through the year. It won’t make everybody’s problems disappear but the hampers have always been a gratefully-received sign that Camden is a community that cares for its neighbours.

If football is not your thing, we also have the big hamper quiz taking place at the Sheephaven Bay pub in Camden Town on December 12, hosted by landlord Pat Logue and The Chase star Shaun Wallace. We’ll make sure we tell all our readers about anybody who helps the cause with a special event over the coming weeks. Thank you for your tremendous support.
