HAMMER wielding moped thieves smashed the front window of Finchley Road Waitrose in the early hours of this morning and cleaned-out the tobacco section.

Met Police said they were called to the “aggravated burglary” at 2.25am following reports that three men in motorcycle helmets – one carrying a hammer – had raided the flagship store.

Staff said almost all the cigarettes from the kiosk had been taken.

The tobacco thieves entered by smashing a large pane of glass that was being replaced this morning.  They made a getaway towards Kilburn, police said.

The cigarette shelves were empty this morning

A Met statement added:  “Staff were present at the store but did not come into contact with the suspects. No-one was injured.  Officers were called at 02.25hrs on Friday, 19 January to a supermarket in Finchley Road, NW3 to reports of a burglary.”

There have been no arrests. Anyone with information about the burglary can call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
