HALLOWEEN was cancelled in Camden Town this week after spooky decorations were stolen from outside someone’s home – for the fourth year running.
Saadik Abramov’s eerie props have become a seasonal staple in Arlington Road – but, sadly, they never last longer than three weeks before they get nicked.
“It’s a tradition at this point,” she told the New Journal last week. Every October, Ms Abramov, who is from San Francisco where Halloween is a “big deal”, dresses a mannequin with masks to post a different scary figure outside her home.
“We’re in a basement flat so it’s my way of saying to children that we pass out candy every year,” Ms Abramov said.
“When we first moved here only three kids came. Last year we had about 50 kids. It was quite a lot. I loved it. I was popping up and down from the sofa because every minute we had a new trick or treater. I’m known as the American lady who gives candy away.”
But only a week after she had put a lifelike Penny Wise – the terrifying clown character in the horror movie It – on her doorstep, the gruesome effigy was gone.
She has now replaced it, but Ms Abramov said: “It happens every year. And not to mention random pumpkins as well. “I reckon because Halloween is such a big deal in America, people respect the tradition that you don’t touch anyone else’s decorations. But because it’s not so big here, maybe that’s why.”
She added: “My happiest childhood memories were Halloween, the community and frivolity of it. It’s kinda like a social contract where you pay it forward when you’re an adult.
“Especially if you live in London, I think it’s more important to do it. kids in the inner city should be able to partake as well.”
An American Werewolf in London was grabbed
AMERICAN fright night fan Saadik Abramov has been visited by light-fingered spirits every year since moving to Camden Town four years ago.
In 2020, “Robbie the Zombie” was stolen in broad daylight and we reported on Ms Abramov offering a £100 prize to whoever returned it.
The following year she sought to deter thieves by connecting a witch to “very heavy ivy plants”. This didn’t stop the Halloween bandits, although Ms Abramov said: “She was stolen but the thief didn’t get too far – they left her halfway down the road.”
Last year a werewolf was guarding the front door – but it too caught the eye of a thief.
“We caught them red-handed,” Ms Abramov said. “There was a very inebriated man who insisted he wanted to be a werewolf. He started howling at the mannequin and wanted to take the mask.
“My husband and I just laugh at it. I buy extra decorations because I assume they will be stolen.”
