ALEX Scott hailed Arsenal’s grit and determination after they secured back-to-back victories in the Women’s Super League.

Chioma Ubogugu scored the winner as the Gunners won 1-0 at Manchester City’s new Academy Stadium on Sunday, just five days after beating Bristol Academy 2-0 at Meadow Park.

City and England midfielder Jill Scott was sent off for a headbutt after reacting to a challenge from Arsenal defender Jade Bailey just before the hour mark.

And namesake Alex admitted that, despite the player advantage, her side still had to be at their best to hold on for the win.

“I think we did really well to see the game out,” said the England defender.

“They played well with 10 and it’s something we have to learn from but we did well to ride the storm.

“We wanted to carry the momentum from Wednesday’s win and we showed a lot of character.

“There’s a few of us carrying injuries, myself included, so it’s been tough playing three games in a week.”

Pedro Martinez Losa’s side are now second in the table, two points behind early pacesetters Chelsea – who have taken maximum points from their opening games, managed by former Parliament Hill schoolgirl Emma Hayes,

The Blues continued their ferocious start to the season with a 1-0 victory over champions Liverpool thanks to a second-half strike from Eniola Aluko.
