THREE games, 17 goals scored, and a so far unbreachable defence: it’s a good time to be a Camden Town WFC supporter.

More than 150 fans flocked to the Maurice Rebak Stadium in North Finchley on Sunday to see Town continue their outstanding start to the season with an emphatic 7-0 win over Sport London E Benfica.

A big crowd loves nothing more than a few good goals to cheer. But perhaps the most impressive element in Camden Town’s start to their new campaign is the fact that they haven’t conceded a single shot on target so far.

The supporters aren’t the only ones purring at what manager Darren Smith and his players are producing out on the pitch – although for some, it’s just a piece of a much bigger and more ambitious puzzle.

“Of course we should enjoy days like this,” said club chairman Richard Mahoney, who lives in Highbury.

“To win 7-0 in front of 150 people in our first home game of the season is special, and I’m incredibly proud of the players, Darren, his staff and everyone behind the scenes who have worked so hard to get us here.

“But our ambitions have never been about winning three football matches. We have a long-term vision for Camden Town WFC, and we are trying to build something that can continue progressing through the football pyramid for many years to come.

“We want to build a serious, sustainable and successful women’s football club that this part of London can be proud of. Results like today are another small step on that journey, but there is an enormous amount of work still ahead of us, and that is what excites me most.”

Short-term goals, though, are just as enjoyable, and on Sunday there were seven of them to keep fans happy.

Kelly Faye opened the scoring from the penalty spot midway through the first half after Anna Kimberley was brought down in the box.

A late flurry of goals before the break ignited a party-like atmosphere that wouldn’t have been out of place at the Notting Hill Carnival across the capital.

Sanaa Williams doubled Town’s advantage with her third of the season, before quickfire goals from Maya Brueckner and Maria Paz Vera gave Smith’s free-scoring side a commanding 4-0 advantage at half-time.

There was no easing off after the break. On 68 minutes, Maxine Borden produced the goal of the afternoon, unleashing a tremendous strike from outside the penalty area to make it five.

Faye then added her second of the game with another excellent long-range strike, before Ice Kamara completed the scoring with a calm and composed finish.

After the final whistle, Smith warned Town’s trophy rivals that there’s still plenty more to come from his talented squad.

He said: “It’s been an excellent start. Three wins, 17 goals and three clean sheets is something that the players deserve enormous credit for, particularly because we have been so dominant without the ball as well as with it.

“But I still don’t think we’ve seen anywhere near the full potential of this group yet. There are combinations still developing, new players still learning about each other, and areas where I know we can become much better.

“That’s the exciting thing for me. I’m pleased with our start, but I’m certainly not satisfied.

“The standards within this group of players are very high, and our job now is to keep pushing them even higher.”
