AARON Ramsey admits Chelsea are “worthy champions” following Sunday’s stalemate at the Emirates, but insists Arsenal are heading in the right direction.
There was little for the home fans to cheer about during the London derby, with Per Mertesacker and substitute Danny Welbeck missing the half chances that fell their way.
But with Chelsea seeing not one but three calls for a first-half penalty waved away by referee Michael Oliver, the goalless draw can be seen as a positive result for the Gunners.
Reflecting on The Blues’ imminent title success, Ramsey said: “They’ve only lost twice this season, so their consistency has been the best and that’s what you need. They’ve definitely been the best team in the league. They’ve done really well in the bigger games where they’ve kept their shape and frustrated teams like they did to us on Sunday. Full credit to them, they defended well.
“They came here not to lose the game and they did that.”
With the runners-up spot still up for grabs, and with it automatic qualification for the Champions League – and the chance to retain the FA Cup – Ramsey was adamant that Arsenal are improving. “Second spot is progression from last season definitely and from a couple of seasons where we have been battling for fourth,” said the midfielder. “We’re in another FA Cup final so maybe you can say that’s an improvement on last season.”
