‘Green oasis’ promise could turn out to be an empty one
Friday, 28th June 2019
• THE “promise” by the council to transform Camden High Street into a green oasis will, unfortunately, should their past record be anything to go by, remain just that, another empty promise.
Camden Council’s negligence and stubborn refusal to tackle the health damage inflicted on its residents by “deadly diesel” emissions, are in stark contrast to the prompt action taken years ago by those neighbouring boroughs Islington and Westminster, who have successfully curbed pollution by implementing such measures as no-idling warning signs and handing out heavy fines for motorist not complying.
A further example of how more determined they are to tackle pollution then Camden is the latest news that Islington has become the first borough to purchase “smart cameras” that will help them better monitor air pollution and catch rogue heavy goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes that enter residential streets.
It’s been well over a year since the promise was made by Camden councillor Adam Harrison to reduce air pollution by various methods, among which, were giving parking wardens the powers to fine owners of idling vehicles. None of these promises have come to fruition.
In the meantime, people are dying and every day children’s lungs are filled with this invisible “toxic” killer. Maybe the only avenue left is for the people to take legal action against Camden for refusing to meet their obligations on our right to a breath of fresh.
