THE Golden Lion needed “the luck of the Irish” to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Liam Tarrant Cup on Monday.
In a closely-fought contest, they won a nine-frame thriller against the Boston Rimmers.
With just 11 points separating the two sides in division one of the Chalk Farm Pool League, this was always going to be a close encounter.
So it proved and with the score poised at 4-4, it was showdown time – and time for a touch of ice cool Irish as Brendan O’Hara took to the table in Royal College Street.
The potter, who grew up in Lurgan in Northern Ireland, misjudged the pace of a tricky plant but yet managed to pot both red balls and finish perfectly on the black – which he sunk with ease to secure a pulsating 5-4 win for the Lion.
Delighted team captain Shaun Pollard joked: “He couldn’t play a shot like that again if he tried. Next time we’re involved in nail-biting game we’re sending in Brendan so that we can take advantage of some more of that Irish luck!”
