ACLAND Burghley School became the centre-point of European fencing over the weekend when talented youngsters from 16 countries descended on Tufnell Park.
The GLL Camden International Cadet Sabre Tournament has become one of the most eye-catching competitions on the European circuit, attracting the very top names within the sport.
Camden Fencing Club’s Jonathon Webb snatched the chance to showcase his skills as he remained unbeaten throughout his pool matches, confidently progressing into the semi-finals.
His run of success was only halted in the final four when he was beaten 15-10 by Spain’s Carlos Olmedo.
Despite the defeat there was plenty for Webb to smile about as he secured a bronze medal, displaying the skills that have seen him climb into fifth place in the European rankings, the highest ever placing for a British fencer.
Club-mate William Moore surprised onlookers as he battled his way through a much-more experienced line-up to finish in a respectable 12th place.
In a field of 76 competitors, Britain’s second-ranked cadet, Rubin Amsalem, overcame a shaky start to finish in 21st place overall.
All three Camden fencers will now take part in the forthcoming European Championships in Budapest.
There was also success for Webb, Moore and Amsalem in the team events as they helped Great Britain secure a bronze medal.
