It reports on local heroes and characters, spotlights inequality, keeps councils on their toes and scoops the broadsheets with the eloquence of resident David Hare.

His plea that the government not revert to slick spin and obfuscation but deals honestly with its mistakes over the last three months was a cry for us all, (We deserve honesty from the government, May 1).

The UK will likely have the highest death count per capita in Europe. Governments are elected to lead, this one has taken us into a deadly mire.
