• I WILL be delighted if the council succeed in stopping unauthorised advertising murals that are further polluting our townscape which even years ago seemed to be thoroughly saturated with ads.

An alien from another planet would be baffled by the Earthlings’ apparent obsession with consumer goods and services.

In fact the obsession lies with that minority of maniac humans whose life’s work is selling stuff – stuff that we frequently neither want nor need.

I would propose to the council and the government that they crack down on all advertising except that practised through the calls of the stall holders: “Nice King Edward spuds, 80p a kilo!” sort of thing.

I’m told that the sensible authorities in São Paulo, Brazil, banned all advertising hoardings in the city about five years ago, and the ad-free policy has held.

Doubtless that didn’t turn it into a paradise, but it must have improved life in that city. And imagine how marvellous Camden might be.
