Good Germans who opposed Hitler were brave and noble

• WILSON John Haire’s graceless response to those who sacrificed their lives opposing Hitler says more about him than them, (The élite had their own motive for trying to kill Hitler, December 24).

He is over-simplistic about the Second Front. It was not delayed to await a German victory over the Soviets, otherwise the massive supply of vehicles and weapons supplied to the Soviets by the Americans and the British (the Murmansk Convoys), and the blanket bombing of German cities would make no sense.

The Second Front was delayed for strategic reasons. The German officers acted as they did out of principle, not because killing Hitler might have prevented the advance of the Red Army. They have been accused of being slow off the mark, but not lacking in nobility and courage.

The book under review (Catrine Clay’s The Good Germans) is more about civilian than military Resistance. One wonders what it means that Wilson John Haire has nothing to say about that.
