AT the rate they’re going, members from the Veras Academy Karate Club are going to have to build a new dojo just so they’ve got somewhere to store their trophy haul.

Led by head instructor Sensei Raphael Veras, a team of top fighters hit the heights at the weekend when they represented England at the prestigious International Coupe de Kayl in Luxembourg.

Brothers Luan, Liam and Luca Veras all struck gold in their respective age groups in the junior ranks, while team-mate Lucienne Brown also did well to bag a bronze medal.

Senior competitors Andras Tomas and Andrew McLarney were also among the medals as the Veras Academy international squad returned home with four golds, a silver and five bronzes.

In a busy weekend, the club also had a squad competing in the Meopham Open Competition in Kent. Paddy Gemmell was among the stars of the show as she won a gold and a silver medal in her age group, while team-mates Elizabeth Hutchings and Daniel Gardner also collected a gold and a bronze medal respectively.

The success follows on from another tremendous showing at the British International Karate Championships, where the Veras brothers, Seyhan Cinar and Luke Kavanagh all proved that they’re top of the chops!
