THERE were goals galore as the Camden Sunday League returned to action at the weekend, with the opening eight fixtures producing 38 goals at Hackney marshes.

Among the teams celebrating on the first day of the season was Clerkenwell Old Boys, who kicked off their Division One campaign with a 2-1 victory over Badu.

Much-fancied Badu took a half-time lead from the penalty spot but Clerkenwell bounced back to take all three points thanks to goals from debutant Gavin Auty and Jamie Salvoni.

In Division Two, Chalk Scratchings came out on top in a five-goal thriller against Stamford Athletic.

Scratchings raced into an early lead when Franco Cima broke down the right and put the ball in the middle, where Cary Hudson was waiting to pounce and break the deadlock.

Stamford battled back to turn the game around and take a 2-1 lead. But Cima’s instinctive finish levelled the scores to make it 2-2 at half time. And there was no let-up after the interval.

A topsy-turvy game was settled in spectacular fashion when Chris Clarke capped a man-of-the-match performance by smashing home the winner to earn Scratchings an opening day 3-2 win.
