MEMBERS of Parliament Hill Bowling Club showcased the sport in all its glory over the weekend when they gathered on their home lawn in NW5 to bowl for the right to have their names engraved on one of six trophies.

Harry Gooch was the biggest winner of the Club Finals weekend as he beat Bob Atherton by 21-18 to win the Hill Cup on Saturday, before returning on Sunday to beat Alf Turner 21-9 to win the men’s championship.

Husband and wife combo Richard and Pauline Caylor beat Wally Cowley and Ann Taylor 22-17 on Sunday to win the mixed pairs final, while Richard edged out Wally again later that afternoon to retain his Seven-Up title. Sandra Lacey was also celebrating after she beat Maggie Kenny 21-9 to win the ladies’ championship.

Perhaps the most tense final of the weekend, however, came in the 100-Up competition where there was more than just silverware on the line.

Sheila Presley was smiling even more than usual as she beat her husband Brian 101-99 to clinch the trophy, along with the bragging rights.

Club secretary Paul Mennell said: “Bowls has always been looked upon as an older person’s sport but, as the Commonwealth Games proved this year, several younger bowlers are now participating in the sport. We signed up two younger members at the weekend, and would love to see that trend continue.”
